What is Aikido?
O'Sensei
Aikido is a relatively modern Japanese martial art developed by Morihei Ueshiba, known in Aikido circles as O’Sensei.
The techniques of aikido involve joint locks, throws and pins with the emphasis being on breaking an opponent’s balance. Aikido focuses not on punching or kicking opponents but rather on using their own energy to throw them away or bring them to the ground in a controlled manner.
Along with the physical aspects of the art, a strong moral and ethical code of conduct. All aikido techniques are learned cooperatively at a pace suited to the abilities of each trainee. According to O’ Sensei, the goal of aikido is not the defeat of others, but the defeat of the negative characteristics which inhabit one’s own mind and inhibit personal growth.
